Allen, I think you and any other sympathetic Thoreau-heads (there are insurgents allegedly in their last throes, and then there are "Thoreau-heads") will much enjoy, as I have, reading Michael Pollan's "Second Nature" - it's got a subtitle - but it's his exploration of the history of gardening in the midst of growing his own garden. The chapter on "Weeds" is worth twice the price of admission. The book is as much about gardening as it is about the literature of gardening and, for your New England soul, he bounces a great deall off the writing of both Thoreau and Emerson - and not necessarily favorably, or uncritically - but obviously infused by those traditions, as well. No love or excuses for the nettle after an in-depth invasion of such, etc.
